Four ways to feel ‘the empty breath’

You experience the empty breath in the non-definable shape of a ball-like thing. The ball has no fixed size, but often, its top goes through your head and the bottom through the stomach. However, since you do not explicitly experience it inside or outside the body, it is not an out-of-body experience. Besides, that experience rests on believing in being someone in a body, and the empty breath undoes that idea.

Therefore, since it is a no-body experience, it is not experienced by the outward but inward-facing senses. That does not mean you do not care for the body and the appearances surrounding it, but you are indifferent to the outcome.

The empty breath has no definitive centre or border.

The empty breath has no definitive centre or border. Everything is constantly moving. Hence, your experience changes from moment to moment.

Feelings are subjective

If you are future-minded, you may experience the ball of the empty breath to start before the body and then go behind it. But if you are concerned about the past, you probably begin experiencing it from the back to the front of the body. In other words, the experience of the empty breath is coloured by your conditioning.

That is not a problem for the empty breath. Contrary to you, it does not need to be acknowledged in a particular way. So, regardless of how and where you experience it, the empty breath carries out its purpose: to make you indifferent to experiences.

Since the empty breath is not static, its experience quickly changes and may differ from the descriptions below. No worries. Connecting with it is not about doing something specific to feel something definitive but going with an abstract flow. You only feel obliged to do ‘the right thing’ if you want to make a difference, which is not the purpose of the empty breath.

Basic intro to the non-definitive shape of the empty breath

The empty breath looks like an egg-shaped ball with oval circles moving inside it. However, contrary to what you see in the above illustration, the empty breath does not have a definitive centre or border. Its edge is blurry, and neither size nor shape is constant. It may get bigger and smaller here and there, and up and down is unsettled. Hence, it momentarily seems more pear-shaped than egg-shaped.

The same applies to the innumerable diffused circles inside the empty breath, located vertically and horizontally, plus in between. In the simplified illustration above, you cannot see that all the circles contain two yin-yang-shaped waves, resembling the orange and blue waves in the illustration further below. All the circles work together as one yin-yang movement rolling in all directions. See the golden animation much further down.

However, since that is very difficult to comprehend in a world where we are conditioned to divide reality into more than one, most do not feel the simultaneous movements of the circles. Instead, they sense one circle inside the empty breath at a time. No worries. It is not about perfection but going with the flow as it comes to you.

When breathing in, the flow of the empty breath could start in a circle from the stomach, vertically going behind the body to the top of the head. From there, the flow follows the circle before the body, returning to the stomach when breathing out. It could also be in the opposite direction. It does not matter.

Or perhaps it is a circle with the same diameter, but you follow it from the underbelly to the throat and back or from the rectum to the heart and back. The circle may expand its diameter. Hence, the flow goes from the underbelly to a point above the head and back or from the rectum further above the head and back. The latter circle metaphorically goes from hell to heaven, so you may feel frightened or spaced out if you get stuck in one of those extremes. See Duality Hack #8.1.

But the circle can also be smaller, going from the heart to a point above the head and back. Or you may not feel the flow in a vertical circle from the back to the front of the body but in a horizontal circle from the left to the right side or anywhere between these two. But no matter where you feel the empty breath, it is the same emptiness.

Four ways of feeling the empty breath

  • THE SURFING OF IT feels like riding on waves of bliss.
  • THE SWING OF IT feels like rocking in bliss.
  • THE ENGINE OF IT feels like a fountain of bliss.
  • THE SOUND OF IT feels like transparent bliss.

Please do not use these categories to limit your experience of the empty breath but samples of going with the flow. However, you can feel the empty breath if you do not wish to be or have more because it has nothing to give but the bliss of nothing, making you indifferent to something.

Surfing the empty breath

Further above, there is a simplified illustration of the empty breath. However, the circles are not red, and there are an endless number of them. Also, as mentioned, the drawing does not reflect that the empty breath and its circles have no definitive border or centre. Neither does it show that each circle contains two non-definitive yin-yang-shaped waves (without holes), as in the image above. The colours in the picture only have illustrative purposes because the empty breath is colourless.

When the breath expands the body, you surf the blue wave, where it meets a circle going vertically from the stomach and behind the body up into the head. From there, while the breath contracts the body, you surf the yellow wave, where it meets the circle in front of the body down to the stomach. That is if you sense the waves in a circle this size going vertically from the back to the front of the body. As mentioned, the direction does not matter, and the circle can be smaller or bigger. Furthermore, you can surf the waves in a horizontal circle or anywhere between.

It is not essential to be in total sync with the physical expansion and contraction of the body. You experience that with the outward-facing senses and the empty breath with the inward-facing senses. Nor does it matter if you miss part of the circular movement. What matters is you follow the flow as it comes to you. By doing that, you are mainly in the world of the inward-facing senses. Therefore, since you forget the physical breath, it can take care of itself without you trying to manipulate it with ideas of synchronisation, balance, wholeness and whatnot.

Maybe the ecstatic way to surf the waves for you is to go the whole way around one of them, more or less aligned with the breath extracting and contracting the body. Then, continue by going the entire way around the other wave. Many other joyous ways are revealed when following the flow.

As told, you can surf the waves of the empty breath in both directions. Going counterclockwise tends to lessen physical awareness. Hence, you become less interested in returning to your former experience of being someone substantial in a tangible world.

The same applies if you experience the non-definable edges of the empty breath passing over the head and below the underbelly. Therefore, since you do not disturb the body by trying to integrate it with your mental wellness ideas, it is free to hook up with the biological system per its physical nature. However, you can also surf the waves of the empty breath to ease physical or psychological problems. See the appendix.

The swing of the empty breath

Surfing the yin-yang-like waves in the empty breath is primarily felt outside the body. But the swing of it, you sense in the body. It comes from the non-definitive curved line moving between the two yin-yang-like waves. See the above animation. Probably due to the definitive size of the body, the curved line in the swing of the empty breath feels less bowed and shorter than the line between the two waves when surfing the empty breath, as described above.

The swing of the empty breath extracts and contracts the body in a steady rhythmic flow of breathing in and out. You may feel it as slower than when you imagined being in charge of breathing. The break in between expansion and contraction probably seems longer. Nonetheless, the swing of the empty breath feels more powerful. Sometimes, it is as if the body does not have enough room for it, even though it moves nothing but emptiness.

You feel the swing of the empty breath by following the curved line in one of the empty breath’s circles, vertical, horizontal, or anywhere between. You can also feel the swing in all the circles simultaneously. It is as if everything spins so fast that it stands still. However, that may be too unfamiliar, so you probably prefer to feel the swing of the empty breath in one circle at a time.

The circles with the swing of the empty breath are more egg-shaped (see the above animation). But you do not notice it because it is only the swing of the curved line inside ‘the egg’ that you feel – often in an illogical way. For example, breathing in, you may solely experience the swing of it at the bottom of ‘the egg’ and breathing out, you feel it at the top. It could also be the other way around, or only at the bottom or the top. Maybe you experience the curved line going repeatedly or up and down simultaneously.

Like the other ways of feeling the empty breath, it presupposes you acknowledge you are not in charge. Using the technique for the Immortal Sweetness (Duality Hack # 11.2)), you automatically lose focus, thus out of control and a vessel for the empty breath.

The engine of the empty breath

Besides feeling the swing of the empty breath or surfing its yin-yang-like waves more or less in alignment with the extraction and contraction of the physical breath, you can also feel a constant rush of energy at the root of the empty breath. It is not rhythmic but chaotic. Yet, it is the force behind the continuous rhythm of the empty breath. Connecting with the engine of the empty breath, you get a subtle sense of being here and everywhere. Or as if whirling through a world without limits, undefined as someone.

There are no rules, but it could be that a take-off into the empty breath takes you to its engine. And what a relief it is to float in chaos instead of being limited by the rigid world of the outward-facing senses.

Unlike the swing of the empty breath, but like surfing its waves, the engine of the empty breath is sensed inside and outside the body – or rather like there is no inside and outside. When you do not try to catch this abstractness, it feels like you are a fountain of bliss.

The engine of the empty breath may be more accessible if you start by recognising it outside the body, so its density is not an obstacle. Then, you are automatically taken inside because the engine does not know one from the other. Next, you may start surfing the empty breath, feeling the swing of it or hearing its transparent sound.

The sound of the empty breath

Like a bass, the sound of the empty breath is not only heard but also felt in the body. It sounds like ‘so’ when the body expands and ‘ham’ when it contracts.

Sometimes, this rhythmic sound of ‘so-ham’ seems to come from the nose. But at other times, you sense it from an undefined space in the back of the head. And then again, since the sound does not seem to have a definable location, you do not know if it is inside or outside the head. It is as if it originates from an invisible space outside the body.

Catching the sound of the empty breath is not a compelling experience, as it cancels out the notion of a being in a specific body. It is like there is no definable border between the body and its apparent surroundings. For example, a sofa does not seem to differ from the body sitting there when deeply connected with the transparent sound of the empty breath. Therefore, since inside and outside means nothing, there is no separation to define a world limited by time and space. Hence, it is exposed as make-believe.

But just as the set-up in a game world is the same whether you know it is fictional, a world defined by time and space remains the same when you know it is an illusion. However, your relationship with it changes. Appearing there is a pretence like you pretend to be someone in roleplay. See Duality Hack #2.1-5.

Via the transparent sound of the empty breath, you naturally drift into glimpses of the Enlightenment of that which is One. The visual-minded experience them as visions of light, and the auditory-minded as Celestial Music. If you are more emotional-minded, you may feel the vibration that Aum, Sohang, and The Word of God symbolise or taste the Immortal Sweetness. See Duality Hack #11.2.

The empty breath brings about a state of not-knowing

You cannot hold onto an experience of the empty breath because you are in a state of not-knowing. Therefore, Alexius had to quickly toggle between a state of not-knowing and the conscious experience of being someone to compile the above descriptions of how the empty breath feels. Hence, his descriptions may seem patchy and confusing. If so, do not try to correct your disorientation but use it to ignite a take-off into the empty breath.

If you still need clarification, you are welcome to contact Alexius. However, using your uncertainty to ignite a take-off into the empty breath is preferable because he can help neither you nor himself, as he sees nobody needing help.

So, you are better off reading about the empty breath until you can hardly stay awake. Then go to bed, forget what you read, and patiently wait for the connection with the empty breath. That said, your eyes do not have to be closed, and you do not have to go to bed to connect with the empty breath. You can sit anywhere in any position or walk, run or talk. But you cannot bring about the empty breath by manipulating the physical breath or exercising any other form of control. It is the other way around. When you are not in control, the empty breath joins you.

That is not to say that techniques cannot help you tone down the outward-facing senses, thus activating the inward-facing ones. Unfortunately, many forget that techniques have nothing to do with their accomplishments. For example, the remote control for your music has nothing to do with music.

Please remember that although the connection with the empty breath is impersonal, your memory of it is personal. So, you may not remember it as Alexius.

APPENDIX: Surfing the empty breath to heal the body

Usually, Alexius connects with the empty breath without thinking about directions and whatnot because, in his case, it primarily entails a sense of indifference. However, it is possible to be pickier. For example, if you worry about pain in the back, you can have it massaged by continuously surfing the whole wave behind the back, but not the wave in front of the body, in a vertical circle inside the empty breath. It may not make the pain go away, but indeed the worry. Without it, the pain does not seem dangerous, and thus, it is easier to handle. See Duality Hack #7.1-5.

If you want to be grounded, surf both waves’ outer edges of a horizontal circle, passing through the underbelly or even lower. Suppose you want to enhance being impulsive. In that case, you surf all the way around the wave to the right in a horizontal circle going around the head. If you want to be more calculated, surf the left wave instead.

In a horizontal circle around the chest, you can surf all around the wave in front of the chest to ease the restricted feeling caused by imagined emotions there. You surf both waves wholly in a horizontal circle around the head or stomach for vertigo or hay fever.

Sometimes, problems like spasms are the body’s way of shaking parts into a position that benefits the whole. In such cases, spasms should not be disturbed. But in other cases, you can use the empty breath to calm the spasms.

If the spasms are in the hips or underbelly, or those areas are blocked, you surf the whole wave behind the body and then the one in front in a horizontal circle around the lower back. You could also try surfing in a similar circle where the waves are not behind and in front of the body but on its sides. The circle size, thus the waves, adjusts per the problems in those areas.

The empty breath is beneficial for alleviating allergy symptoms or the symptoms of IBS and COPD, for example. However, it may not end the physical sicknesses because Alexius’ Duality Hacks aims not to heal the body but the sick belief in being there. See Duality Hack #8.8. However, since that frees the body from your domination, it often heals itself. However, generally, it is best not to use the empty breath but to be used by it and trust that its emptiness heals you from the belief in being something, thus not burdened by anything.
