Notes on ‘the empty breath’

Something is nothing

The empty breath isn’t about gaining love, health, wealth, or success. Instead, it’s about realising that being and having something is nothing, because reality is the formlessness of Oneness. Still, while we appear in a world of appearances, we need something, such as food and shelter, to survive (see Duality Hack #3.6).

Fortunately, the empty breath synchronises outward-facing consciousness’s world of something with inward-facing consciousness’s abstractness in a ratio that enables us to enjoy something like food, even as we recognise its ultimate emptiness.

Since Oneness is formless and thus endless, it’s impossible to depart from it. If we believe we’re in a world formed by time and space, the empty breath is our life-jacket.

Images on a computer screen look real thanks to clever patterns of zeros and ones, brought to life by software composed of them. Similarly, the brain, our own ‘app’, processes our experiences from nothing, generating the illusion of us as someone definitive experiencing a world of something.

But the empty breath, unprocessed by the brain, doesn’t see us as someone definitive in a world of something. That’s why it’s easy to perceive our experiences of something as nothing when connected with the empty breath. It doesn’t mean we ignore feasible needs – if we break a leg, we still treat it. But seeing it as nothing frees us from needless worry.

The connection with the empty breath doesn’t give us anything. That’s why we leave the frustration of something and enter the bliss of nothing.

The bliss of nothing exposes the appearance of something as nothing

The function of the empty breath is to reveal that what we perceive as something is nothing. Thus, something doesn’t conceal the formlessness of Oneness. It’s like realising that the world in a dream is not something but nothing, and so it doesn’t hide that you’re in bed. Of course, you could contemplate not being in a world of something. However, it often becomes a joyless debate rather than the bliss of nothing.

Because you perceive every event through a remix of memories that you adjust each time you recall them to emphasise that everything revolves around you, your perception doesn’t match others’ views of the same event.

This leads you to think that others are wrong and to try to correct them. The more you seem to succeed, the more your memories prove right, thus imprisoning you in the past. Luckily, the empty breath – like a mild breeze – reveals the hollowness of your memories. Hence, since they don’t seem to be something but nothing, you’re in the bliss of nothing.

In the bliss of nothing, you’re never afraid of something.

How to spark a take-off into the empty breath

We feel entertained by a world of duality when we perceive our reaction to the brain’s experiences as twofold. But suppose you interpret your reactions to these experiences through the lens of a specific philosophy, treating feelings such as love as singular. In that case, you miss the interaction of love and hate, so you don’t feel entertained, but somewhat frustrated by being in a world of duality.

Fortunately, when frustration isn’t suppressed, it carries unbound energy that automatically sparks a take-off into the empty breath, wiping your slate clean. Thus, perceiving the brain’s duality experiences as twofold, you feel entertained by all of them.

Starting a take-off into the empty breath is no different from allowing your body to respond naturally to sexual arousal – no conscious effort or thought is needed. However, being sexually aroused reinforces the belief in being someone definitive, whereas the empty breath undoes it. This is not to say that you must avoid sex. On the contrary, an orgasm sparks a take-off into the empty breath when you follow its intense energy.

Connecting with the empty breath doesn’t require meditation or other techniques based on exclusion or restraint. It’s as simple as standing by your unwillingness to be nobody. This raw unwillingness contains the spark that launches you into the empty breath.
