Perceiving your reaction to duality as ‘it is what it is

Being in sync with the world of duality is not about affirming its appearances as good but about being aware of your reactions to them. For example, if you feel upset about an appearance, you do not disassociate yourself from feeling troubled. Instead, you perceive it as ‘it is what it is.’ That reveals your response is twofold. Troubled is coupled with its counterpart, untroubled, and they interact to define each other.

In this interaction and those that follow, you are in the duality flow, thus in sync with duality. Therefore, also with the brain because duality is its fantasy. And since you also are its fantasy, being in sync with the brain means you are in sync with yourself.

Suppose you assume you will feel lighter if you disassociate yourself from the unwanted part of a feeling’s twofoldness by dumping it in your body or seeing it as describing someone else. In that case, it appears substantial, and you feel heavier, not lighter. Thankfully, perceiving your reaction to the heaviness as ‘it is what it is’, you see it is in an interdependent relationship with lightness. Thus, feeling heavy, you feel just as light.

Specific versus twofold

If you want to experience the duality flow, you must avoid focusing on anything specific. The same applies if you wish to undo your belief in duality. Since the perception ‘it is what it is’ cancels out specifics, choosing that perception kills two birds with one stone.

When you stop holding onto something specific, it is easy to be in a world of duality. That does not mean you cannot have a particular spouse, but your reaction to the relationship is twofold.

If your attitude to something is single-minded, you get a specific experience. However, it does not last because all experiences are made of opposing elements in a world of duality. Hence, feeling on top is soon replaced by feeling down. On the other hand, if your approach is dualistic, you do not aim for the top to avoid going down. Instead, you go for the constant interplay of up and down. Although it may not feel as exciting as being on top all the time, you are free from the fear of falling because you are in the duality flow.

The duality flow depends not on the specific elements in a duality pair but on the resilient energy between them. It is like the springy drive that makes a yoyo go up and down.

In the duality flow, you do not establish your response to something as definitively good or evil. Hence, the duality flow goes on since there is nothing specific to fear.

When you have followed the duality flow for some time, the particular state of mind you formerly conjured up to feel at ease is forever out of reach because you see everything as twofold. What that means, you do not know. Nor do you care because you feel completed by the constant interaction of opposites. So, there is no need for a specific understanding or state of mind to escape feeling disturbed.

In a world of duality, all experiences are twofold

Having established ‘it is what it is’ as your default perception, you are always in the togetherness of the duality flow. Hence, you feel plentiful and not needy, as when you divide the duality pairs into separate components, thus feel alone.

To feel important is a single-minded notion achieved by separating it from its counterpart. Hence, it entails loneliness. But in the duality flow, importance interacts with unimportance, so you get togetherness.

Long ago, Alexius conditioned himself to hide his sadness behind justified anger and disgust. That changed when he did not try to hide or rationalise his sadness. Instead, he felt it and perceived it as ‘it is what it is.’ Then, he met himself as twofold: a little sad boy drifting helplessly around and a happy boy assuredly floating on waves of joy.

In other words, when he saw his sadness was paired with happiness, he stopped fencing off sadness to feel good. Instead, the interaction of happiness and sadness became his basic experience of the duality flow.

Having twofold experiences does not mean you see double. But since you are in the duality flow, your opinions are not definite. Thus, you can explore everything in non-conditioned ways.

Do not expect your wishes to be fulfilled when you follow the duality flow – instead, count on being fulfilled by twofoldness.

The brain has a plan, so you do not have to worry

Being in the duality flow is like having an electronic calendar. The appropriate thoughts automatically pop up when needed. However, not systematically, like when seeds are planted in rows to get the most in return. Instead, they pop up in nature’s creative way. It enthusiastically throws seeds everywhere. 

In other words, do not count on having coherent thoughts, but count on having fun. However, every experience is twofold, so you do not have fun without feeling bored. Thankfully, that is not a problem in the duality flow because the interaction of opposites feels entertaining.

Since the brain is always in charge, you never have to plan, neither when not in the duality flow. Nonetheless, you may assume you know better, thus dismissing the brain’s signals. However, you only seem to be doing things in your way and pace because you, in retrospect, edit your perception of your experiences, so everything seems to have been planned by you. It is like when you have a chaotic dream. Afterwards, you shape it into something consistent. Per your conditioned point of view, you explain the dream by seeing patterns, displacement activity, unity, synchronicity and karma.

But making it look like you are in the know is exhausting and limits you by your conditioning. In contrast, perceiving your experiences as they are, you are not busy living up to a restricted worldview, thus feeling free and relaxed.

Breathing in and out is the duality flow

Breathing is a basic manifestation of duality and, hence, the easiest way to enter the duality flow. However, most hold their breath to avoid or cling to specific ideas and emotions. Therefore, they miss the duality flow, unable to follow its rhythmic flow of breathing in and out.

That is why Alexius’ Duality Hacks’ recommends perceiving your fixed judgments as ‘it is what it is’ to see they are not static but in constant interaction with their opponent to define each other. Joining that interplay, your breath flows freely, so you are in the duality flow.

You suppress your reaction to the world to prevent seeing that your complaints about it are misplaced. It is not the world but your totalitarian ideas that imprison you.

When you have had enough of living in the totalitarian environment established by your singular opinions, you say, »I prefer the duality flow.« Then you see, it is already in the interaction of breathing in and out (see the box below). It does not mean you must remember the breath to be aligned with the duality flow because breathing happens by itself when you do not interfere. In other words, the duality flow occurs automatically if you do not restrict yourself by hanging onto singular points of view.

There is nothing to forgive when you are in the duality flow 
because feeling wrong constantly interacts with feeling right – and regret is coupled with delight. Therefore, since being wrong feels as strong as right, you are not set on a specific element in a duality pair but on their interplay – like when you breathe, it is neither a matter of feeling extracted nor contracted but how the interplay of these opposites makes you feel good. Or, when you are on a seesaw, being down interacts with being up, thus equally exciting.

Being aligned with the breath is a fundamental way of joining the duality flow. But you neither attend to breathing in the manner described regarding Aum and Sohang in Duality Hack 11.4 nor the empty breath in Duality Hack #9.4. Actually, it is not about how you breathe but going with the interaction of expansion and contraction it entails. This interplay continues whether you breathe slowly or fast through the mouth or nose.

Sensing that interplay is like being on a seesaw, not in balance but in the adventurous interaction of going up and down. Physically speaking, you feel this interplay of expansion and contraction in the stomach and chest. But psychologically speaking, breathing in makes you feel within, and breathing out makes you feel without. So you are constantly in the interaction of opposites, thus the duality flow.

If you leave interaction because you feel disturbed by a singular feeling, you perceive the disturbance as ‘it is what it is’ to experience the interplay of disturbance and peace. Therefore, since the disturbance does not prevent you from being in the duality flow, you continue feeling within and without. If the disturbance is a severe physical problem, you use the vitalisation the duality flow entails to call a healthcare professional.

In the duality flow, you feel complete

Being in the duality flow – the interplay of opposites – is like being in the breath’s interaction of expansion and contraction. You do not notice the opposites specifically, but the energy their interaction generates.

If you feel you have nowhere to go, and it does not entail a specific feeling of lack but of being nowhere and everywhere, you are in the duality flow. The same applies if you go with the interplay of irritation and relaxation. However, as told, the flow is not about the elements in the duality pairs but their interaction. It makes you feel complete – like you feel vitalised by the interplay of breathing in and out.

And like the opposing elements in breathing depend on each other, so do the components in any duality pair. Therefore, if you are not in the constant interplay of opposites, for example, positivity and negativity, your positive attitude is conjured up by distancing yourself from negativity. That is like separating yourself from either breathing in or out. Both are equally necessary.

Fortunately, you do not need to understand the nature of duality to be vitalised by the duality flow. If you perceive your single-minded response to an experience as ‘it is what it is,’ you sense it is not singular but twofold. Hence, you are in sync with duality. You can also get there by entering a state of not-knowing because you come out of it with your slate wiped clean. Therefore, you are the basic self dedicated to duality, seeing nothing as distinct but twofold. Consequently, there is never something specific to upset you. See Duality Hack #9.10.

When you do not attempt to pull apart the duality pairs into independent elements fighting each other but comply with their synergy, the collaboration of love and hate, for example, gives you the complete relationship experience.

Duality is a positive confirmation of non-duality

Reading Duality Hack #8.1-9, you may think you must avoid specific opinions and emotions. However, Alexius’ Duality Hacks is not about banning something. Therefore, if you have a particular opinion about something, you acknowledge it so you can perceive it as ‘it is what it is.’ Since that reveals your reaction is twofold, you are not involved with specifics but their constant interaction. Hence, you are in the duality flow as meant to be in a world of duality.

Adjusting to duality is not a betrayal of non-duality because it is formless, thus endless. Consequently, there could not be a duality fantasy without non-duality. Consequently, living the fiction of duality is a positive confirmation of non-duality.

The duality flow goes to non-duality

When you are in the duality flow, your body gets so relaxed that you automatically sense the signals it gets from the brain of what and when to do something physically.

Besides, the duality flow is so close to the empty breath that suddenly, you are in a state of not knowing. See Duality Hack #9.10. Going back and forth between the duality flow and a state of not-knowing, you are at super speed on a way without distance to non-duality.

The duality flow is very active, so you do not feel it by sitting and meditating but by engaging in rhythmic and uncontrolled physical activity, such as Nordic Walking. In its physical flow, it is difficult to initiate something yourself, so it is excellent for being into the duality flow. That said, the duality flow is not physical. You feel it in the psychological sphere, not the body.

Over time, the duality flow goes to non-duality. That is the end of all experiences because it takes more than one to be aware of something. Consequently, what you believe in being is got and never was there because it requires more than one to be somewhere. Still, you are everywhere because non-duality is formless, thus endless.
